Other people compete for the management of our leisure time, working hard at it. The cultural industry is essentially an entertainment industry (even if entertainment is also provided by politicians and political commentators on news channels). However, it is still entertainment after work. If we don’t work, is there nothing left to do but “entertain ourselves to death”? The Romans believed that there is no otium without negotium - first social duties, and then some form of (preferably noble - cum dignitate) leisure. But doesn’t the ability to spend one's leisure time in a meaningful way originate in employment itself? After stupefying work, doesn’t a person choose equally stupefying entertainment? Sociologists have long pointed out that class structure is reflected and reproduced in consumption – one needs to have the means for it, but also educated tastes. However, the social structure is shaped by work, not by what we do afterwards. But is this relationship still obvious? And what might it be if labor becomes a scarce commodity?
